THE INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE

From the 29/09 until the 12/10/2014

IDC stands for Instructor Development Course, the course that prepares to become a PADI Instructor.

The course last 14 days and can be divided into 2 parts:

  • Assistant Instructor program (AI) from 29/09 to 03/10: you will learn to organize and supervise dive activities, while you concentrate developing teaching techniques.
  • Open Water Scuba Instructor program (OWSI) from 04/10 to 08/10 which introduces you to the PADI System of diver education and concentrates on further developing your abilities as a professional dive educator

Since 2013, it is mandatory to be ERF Instructor (EFRI) to become OWSI so this program is now also added to the IDC, on the 9th of October.

For those who are instructors from other organizations it´s only necessary to make the OWSI.

THE INSTRUCTOR EXAMINATION (IE)

PADI instructor candidates are prepared by Luis Comenge PADI Course Director while the final evaluation is carried out by a PADI Examiner in the IE (Instructor Examination).

In the IE, you will be tested on your teaching ability, water-skills, dive theory knowledge, understanding of the PADI System, your attitude and professionalism.

The Instructor Examination will stand at our dive center on the 11th and 12th of October.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN DURING THE PADI IDC COURSE?

During the course you will learn how to apply the PADI System of Education.

The course content is:

  • Complete the 9 sections of independent learning online through PADI eLearning, or participate in these sections during the IDC:
    - Learning, Instruction and the PADI System.
    - General Standards and Procedures.
    - Risk Management.
    - Diving Marketing.
    - Diving Begin.
    - Teaching Specialty Courses PADI Diving.
    - The Business of Diving.
    - Follow Diving.
    - How to Teach the Recreational Dive Planner (PIR).
  • Participate in the 10 components of the IDC curriculum:
    - Course Orientation.
    - Developing Knowledge Development Presentations.
    - Confined Water Teaching.
    - Conducting Open Water Dives.
    - General Standards and Procedures.
    - Open Water Diver Course.
    - Adventures in Diving Program.
    - Rescue Diver Course.
    - Divemaster Course.
    - Risk Management.
  • Perform three presentations of knowledge development.
  • Make four confined water presentations.
  • Perform two integrated open water presentations (two skills).
  • Perform the 20 dive skills listed on the Skills Evaluation.
  • PADI System Standards and Procedures Exam.
  • Dive Theory Exam.
  • Swim wearing a mask, snorkel and fins, for 800 meters without stopping.

WHAT CAN I TEACH AS A PADI INSTRUCTOR?

After becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be able to conduct the full range from PADI Discover Scuba Diving program to professional PADI Divemaster course. You can also choose to perform, with your PADI Course Director, Instructor multilevel specialties like Digital Photography, Deep dives, Night dives, Emergency Oxygen Provider, Gas Mixer, Dry Suit, Enriched Air Diver (Nitrox)...

PREREQUISITES TO ENROLL THE PADI INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE

To enroll the IDC course, you must:

  • Be PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification from another training organization of recreational diving.
  • Have proof of CPR and First Aid within the last 24 months (PADI, Red Cross, ... must provide a photocopy of the diploma). The Emergency First Response course meets this requirement.
  • Be certified as an Emergency First Response Instructor or equivalent.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be certified as a diver for at least six months.
  • Medical certificate that specifically says you are 'fit for diving', signed by a physician within the past 12 months.

PADI IDC COURSE DOCUMENTATION

The candidate must provide on the first day of class:

  • Medical certificate.
  • Two passport photos with the full name on the back.
  • Photocopy of both sides of all diving certifications held. (Only if not PADI)
  • Photocopy of the last page of your log book.

DIVING EQUIPMENT YOU WILL USE DURING THE PADI IDC

Each candidate will need to be geared up with all the basic scuba equipment for pool training, sea and Instructor Examination:

  • Fins.
  • Mask and tube.
  • Appropriate wetsuit.
  • Knife.
  • BCD.
  • Regulator plus Octopus.
  • Pressure gauge.
  • Depth gauge.
  • Compass.
  • Dive watch.
  • 2 ropes of about 70cm each of at least 5mm.

TEACHING MATERIALS FOR THE INSTRUCTOR COURSE

IDC Candidate pack, you will need for the IDC, including:

  • Guide to teaching.
  • OW, RES and DM exams.
  • Specialty Instructor Manual (CD Rom).
  • Cue cards (OW courses, ADV, and DM RES).
  • PADI Backpack.
  • Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and DivemasterStudent Manual.
  • Diving Knowledge Workbook.
  • Diving PADI Encyclopedia.
  • eRDPml.
  • Pocket mask.


You will also need the EFRI manuals.

Candidates are advised to bring their own materials for note taking like paper, pens, highlighter pens and 'Post It' or similar adhesive.

ACCOMMODATION

The accommodation that we can provide you is a private room in a shared house with other candidates, located in Santa Ponsa, near by our dive center.
